The lightweight composite armour system Dr. Kavitha Iyer developed at the Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment in Kanpur achieves equivalent ballistic protection at 23% lower weight than the incumbent system — the work that earned her the DRDO Technology Award in 2021, and a fair summary of what sixteen years in defence materials science actually looks like: the exacting, largely invisible work of making the material between a soldier and a threat marginally, meaningfully better.
"The materials that protect our soldiers are designed in laboratories most people will never see, by researchers most people will never know. That invisibility does not diminish the work."
Her research sits at the intersection of materials science and national security — ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene composites, ceramic-composite hybrid systems, and ballistic performance under extreme loading conditions. One of her principal papers is now cited in NATO STANAG standards documentation on ballistic protection, a rare citation for an Indian defence researcher in an international standards context.
She holds three granted patents and was a DST Women Scientist Fellow at the University of Delaware's Centre for Composite Materials. Her PhD at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, was recognised with the Materials Research Society of India's Best PhD Thesis award and has since been cited more than 180 times.
