The community cultural centre Mohammed Salim Khan designed in Malappuram won the JK Cement Architecture Award in 2021 and has since entered discussions of contemporary Islamic architecture in India — an unusual distinction for a practice built, in equal measure, on heritage restoration and new institutional buildings. He founded Khan & Associates in Kochi in 2008, after an M.Arch at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, following a B.Arch from CEPT University Ahmedabad, where he won the gold medal and the Dean's Prize for Design Excellence.

In sixteen years, his practice has completed seventy-eight projects across Kerala and Karnataka, including four heritage commissions — two of them Malabar-era structures — that have made him one of the state's more sought-after conservation architects. His restoration of a colonial civic building in Kozhikode earned INTACH Kerala's Heritage Conservation Award in 2019.
He was appointed to the Kerala Archaeology Department's Heritage Conservation Committee in 2016, work that runs in parallel with a growing institutional practice now operating out of Kochi, Kozhikode, and Mangaluru.
